Eye Dzi Patterns — The Geometry of Timely Stages

Eye Dzi are among the most recognizable Dzi patterns.

Yet beyond appearance, eye patterns follow a structural system.

In this framework, Eye Dzi correspond to:

the Twelve Earthly Branch channels

expressed through the:

Twelve Timely Stages of Life (Zhǎng Shēng 長生)

The number of eyes indicates:

where force stands within a developmental cycle

from emergence and growth to maturity, decline, storage, and renewal.

Eye Dzi are therefore read through three layers:

Eye Count → Branch Channel / Timely Stage

Eye Shape → Heaven, Human, or Earth Expression

Element Pattern → Phase Tendency

Together, these layers determine how the Dzi is interpreted.

The Twelve Eye Dzi Channels

Eye Count Branch Timely Stage Heaven Eye 天 (Eye with Pupil) Human Eye 人 (Buddha Eye / Circle) Earth Eye 地 (Phoenix Eye / Oval)
1 Eye Tiger 寅 (Yin) Birth / Emergence (長生 Zhǎng Shēng) Emergence expressed through intention and differentiated direction Emergence through human continuity and lived development Emergence through material grounding and physical beginnings
2 Eyes Rabbit 卯 (Mao) Bath (沐浴 Mù Yù) Refinement and orientation through heavenly influence Relational development and adaptation Grounded refinement and stabilization
3 Eyes Dragon 辰 (Chen) Crown / Formation (冠帶 Guān Dài) Formation directed through intention Human development and growing capability Material structuring and practical establishment
4 Eyes Snake 巳 (Si) Maturity / Office (臨官 Lín Guān) Directed maturity and focused development Functional competence and continuity Stabilized execution and grounded maturity
5 Eyes Horse 午 (Wu) Prime / Peak (帝旺 Dì Wàng) Peak differentiation and outward direction Peak human activity and continuity Peak material manifestation
6 Eyes Goat 未 (Wei) Decline (衰 Shuāi) Redirection through heavenly adjustment Rebalancing and adaptation Material preservation and stabilization
7 Eyes Monkey 申 (Shen) Weakening (病 Bìng) Strategic correction and differentiated reassessment Human adaptation under pressure Stabilization through practical management
8 Eyes Rooster 酉 (You) Completion (死 Sǐ) Closure through directed intention Human completion and release Material completion and stabilization
9 Eyes Dog 戌 (Xu) Storage / Tomb (墓 Mù) Consolidation of intention Integration through continuity Storage, preservation, and grounding
10 Eyes Pig 亥 (Hai) Dissolution (絕 Jué) Dissolution toward future reorganization Human release and transition Material dissolution and reset
11 Eyes Rat 子 (Zi) Seed / Conception (胎 Tāi) Intentional seed formation Human preparation and continuity Grounded potential and preparation
12 Eyes Ox 丑 (Chou) Nourishment / Gestation (養 Yǎng) Directed cultivation of future potential Human nurturing and continuity Material support and preparation

Heaven, Human, and Earth Eye Types

The shape of the eye determines:

how the Branch tendency expresses

Layer Eye Type Description
Heaven 天 Eye with Pupil Differentiated eye with visible center. Indicates the Branch stage expressed through direction, intention, differentiation, and heavenly orientation.
Human 人 Buddha Eye / Circle Circular eye without pupil. Indicates the Branch stage expressed through continuity, interaction, and human experience.
Earth 地 Phoenix Eye / Elongated / Oval Elongated or oval eye. Indicates the Branch stage expressed through embodiment, manifestation, grounded continuity, and material stabilization.

Reading an Eye Dzi

Eye Dzi are read through three structural components:

Eye Count

Branch channel (Earthly Branch)
Timely Stage of Life

Element Pattern

Stem tendency (Element / Phase Indicator)

Eye Shape

Domain of expression

  • Heaven 天 → intentional, differentiated, directional domain
  • Human 人 → relational, lived, interactional domain
  • Earth 地 → material, embodied, manifested domain

Together, these components form:

Stem + Branch + Domain

or:

JiaZi tendency expressed through Heaven, Human, or Earth

Example

3-Eye Heaven Eye + Water Pattern

Dragon Branch (辰)
Crown / Formation Stage (冠帶)
Water Stem tendency
Heaven domain of expression

Interpretation:

Water-phase tendency expressed through the Dragon developmental stage in the Heaven domain.

Example

7-Eye Earth Eye + Metal Pattern

Monkey Branch (申)
Weakening Stage (病)
Metal Stem tendency
Earth domain of expression

Interpretation:

Metal-phase tendency expressed through the Monkey developmental stage in the Earth domain.

In practical terms:

Element Pattern determines how force transforms

Eye Count determines where within the cycle it stands

Eye Shape determines where it tends to express

This keeps the layers separated:

Stem = phase tendency
Branch = developmental timing
Domain = Heaven / Human / Earth expression
