Understanding the Coiled Dragon in Tian Zhu (Dzi) Beads
Among all Tian Zhu (Dzi) patterns, striped, threaded, and banded beads are collectively known as Happy Dragon Dzi.
They represent motion, not structure — the visible circulation of Yang Qi through stone.
If earlier Dzi patterns describe cosmic order, striped Dzi describe cosmic movement.
In traditional understanding, these linear markings are called the Coiled Dragon — a symbol of life-force in continuous flow, encircling, protecting, and sustaining prosperity.
The Meaning of “Happy Dragons”
Each visible ring or line on a striped Dzi is called a Happy Dragon (喜龍).
These are not decorative marks.
They are channels of blessing, expressing how Yang Qi moves through different stages of life.
Traditionally, there are Twelve Happy Dragons, corresponding to twelve expressions of auspicious fortune, including:
-
Fortune (福)
-
Prosperity (旺)
-
Wealth (財)
-
Smooth Progress (順)
-
Peace (安)
-
Joy (樂)
-
Double Happiness (雙喜)
The dragons do not stand still.
They circulate, repeat, mature, and return — just as life itself does.
The Three Forms of Dragon Motion
All Happy Dragon Dzi appear in three distinct linear forms, each expressing a different intensity of Yang Qi

1. Thread Dzi — Healing Currents
Threads are extremely fine lines, sometimes barely visible.
They represent gentle Yang motion, associated with:
-
Healing
-
Recovery
-
Emotional and physical renewal
-
Quiet rebuilding after depletion
Thread Dzi are traditionally linked with healers, spiritual practitioners, and those restoring balance rather than pursuing rapid change.
Essence:
Subtle Yang that heals through continuity.
2. Stripe Dzi — Continuity and Prosperity
Stripes are clearly visible, medium-width rings circling the bead.
They symbolize:
-
Steady progress
-
Sustained prosperity
-
Reliable movement through life stages
-
Business growth and long-term success
Each stripe represents a phase of advancement. Multiple stripes indicate multiple streams of fortune flowing in parallel.
Essence:
Active Yang that sustains prosperity through rhythm.
3. Band Dzi — Fields of Fortune
Bands are broad, bold rings dominating the bead’s surface.
They express:
-
Culmination
-
Breakthrough
-
Sudden opportunity
-
Tangible rewards
Band Dzi are associated with moments when effort crystallizes into visible success — promotions, recognition, or major life shifts.
Essence:
Amplified Yang that manifests abundance.
The Twelve Happy Dragons Cycle
The Twelve Happy Dragons describe a complete Yang Qi cycle, from awakening to fulfillment.
-
1–3 Dragons: Initiation and guidance
-
4–6 Dragons: Stability and growth
-
7–9 Dragons: Opportunity and achievement
-
10–12 Dragons: Transition, wisdom, and return to harmony
When combined with the three line types (Thread, Stripe, Band), this creates the classical system of the
Thirty-Six Dragons of Flow and Fortune — the full spectrum of Yang motion in human life

Special Striped Dzi — When Motion Becomes Prayer
Some striped Dzi are not worn for fortune, but for devotion and alignment.
These include:
-
Daluo (Melon) Dzi — rhythm, fertility, patience
-
Medicine Dzi — healing, restoration, vitality
-
Black and White Dzi — Yin–Yang balance and internal harmony
In these forms, the Dragon’s motion slows.
Energy becomes breath, prayer, and meditation, rather than outward action.
Why Striped Dzi Are Called “Happy Dragons”
Happy Dragon Dzi are not about force or dominance.
They teach one principle above all:
Life prospers through circulation, not accumulation.
Thread heals.
Stripe sustains.
Band fulfills.
Together, they show how Heaven’s movement passes through Earth — and how human life thrives when it moves in rhythm with that flow.
