Proper maintenance of a Dzi preserves both its physical surface and its subtle resonance.
Because agate is sensitive to moisture, harsh chemicals, and temperature extremes, it should not be washed with water or exposed to detergents, perfume, or prolonged humidity. Such treatment destroys the patina — the natural film formed through generations of touch — and dulls the bead’s living contrast.
The classical method uses sandalwood essential oil mixed with sandalwood powder into a soft paste.
The paste is gently rubbed onto the bead by hand, then buffed with a clean cloth.
This process removes residue, restores luster, and gradually deepens the patina —
an effect achieved only through slow, mindful care.
Cleansing is both physical and symbolic.
The act of attentive polishing renews the bond between keeper and bead, allowing the Dzi to retain its warmth, depth, and quiet luminosity.
Each careful motion honors its age and the hands that held it before.
